First Christmas Eve

Tonight was Beckett's first Christmas Eve and the start of many traditions!! Beckett go a new pair of pajamas for Christmas, which he opened tonight and wore to bed. We read the special copy of The Night Before Christmas that Daddy bought him. We left jumbo cookies and milk out for Santa, and a carrot for the reindeer, along with a note for Santa, of course. Then we fed Beckett and put him to bed. It was a great first Christmas Eve.

New Things

I really feel like Beckett is doing something new everyday now. He's so funny.

He's really trying to get the hang of his jolly jumper now.
He's grabbing for the face of who ever is holding him.
If you hold food in front of him, he dives for it with his mouth open (I think he may be trying to tell us something). Maybe Mommy and Daddy will give him some rice cereal and bowls/spoons for Christmas.
Yesterday he was sitting on my lap, leaning on me, and he totally sat himself up.

And as of yesterday he's officially 5 months old!! Wow!!

During nap time in one of the next few days I promise to update some pictures!

Remembering

Just sitting here thinking back to the day Beckett was born and I'm not sure I ever wrote about how we felt that day, other than excited, of course. I remember when we went to the hospital that morning I totally didn't think I was in labour, so we weren't thinking anything other than how much it sucked that I had a kidney stone at this point in my pregnancy. The drive to the hospital was pretty brutal. I was pretty uncomfortable and remember feeling like it was taking forever for the light at the superstore to change from red to green. When we got to the hospital Bevan dropped me off at the doors to the ER and then went and parked the car. I went in and when I went to the desk to register, I told them I thought I had a kidney stone, but I think since I was pregnant they just sent me to the maternity floor anyways. You know the rest of the story...about how shocked everyone was - including the nurse - when the doctor said I was 4 cm. I guess when we got into the car to go home we were still thinking that it could be any length of time before the baby was actually born, so we were kind of freaking out, but not too bad yet! It was when we were leaving the house to go back to the hospital that afternoon that reality set it - the next time we came home we would have a baby with us!!! Wow!! That's a pretty crazy feeling, to leave the house as 2 people, but return as 3!!! Just wanted to make sure I recorded this, as I want to remember how life changing that moment really was!

So happy to see Daddy

Bevan came home for lunch today, and Beckett was sooooo excited to see him. As soon as he walked through the door Beckett's face lit up, and he giggled. He's never really done that before, it was so cute!

What's going on now..

Well, we had Beckett in to have him weighed again this past Friday (the 11th of December) and he's up to 12 lb 7 oz and 62.6 cm!! Another 5 oz in the past week, which is great considering his lack of weight gain up until a month ago.

-He's been "talking" so much this last week, like ALL THE TIME!!
-He's doing much better in his exersaucer now. He reaches for all the toys, and really like to spin the toy with the chickens in it.
-He's STILL wearing size 1 diapers, at 21 weeks old (almost 5 months), but I think this will be the last package. I bought size 1-2 diapers to try the next time.
-He's laughing a lot more now, especially when we tickle him.
-He's starting to reach for food when we're eating, and following it with his eyes.
-He's reaching for our faces a lot, too.
-He's fascinated by the dog, he could watch him run around all day, I swear.

This morning I was in the kitchen and Bevan and Beckett were in the living room, and when I went in to see what they were doing, they were lying under the Christmas tree!! And Milo was sitting there, too, of course.

He's becoming a better napper now, too. But, he is totally a boy who needs a schedule at this point. His first nap usually happens 1 1/2 - 2 hours after he gets up for the day, and his subsequent naps are usually 2 hours after that. If he manages to have 3 naps in the run of a day, he's a happy baby, but if he misses one for some reason, he's pretty cranky. His bedtime right now is 7 o'clock, but if he misses a nap he's pretty tired before then. He's finally starting to show some signs when he's sleepy, like rubbing his eyes and kind of grunting/squirming around.

He's eating every 3 hours or so during the day, and for the last month or so, just as often at night.

Weight Update

I just got back from having Beckett weighed at the pediatricians office and he is now 12lb 2oz and 62.4 cm long. So he's gained quite a bit of weight in the last 2 weeks!! We've been supplementing him with one bottle a day of pumped breastmilk/formula. Plus I've been taking Domperidone to increase my supply. something seems to be working so I think we'll keep it up!!

It was 1 year ago yesterday that we found out at the doctor's office that we were pregnant!! We got to see Beckett in an ultrasound that day too! This is what he looked like then:

I think he's much cuter now!!

Babbling up a storm

For the last week or so, Beckett has been babbling like crazy again!! He was doing this a lot in mid-September and into October, but then seemed to take a break, but he's back at it is full force!!! Today I was singing old MacDonald had a Farm to him, and I swear he said "E-I-E-I-O"!!! The things we imagine, eh???

I had him on a pretty good sleep schedule until we went home for his baptism. Up until the night before we left he was sleeping about 8 hours for his first stretch every night, but then he started getting up every 2-3 hours again, and has been doing do ever since. And napping has been HORRIBLE again, too!! I just put him down, after being awake for about an hour, but I think I put him down too early. When I looked back at yesterday's naps, he seemed to fall asleep every 2 hours or so. Just when I think I have a pattern figured out he goes and does something different.

He's still getting one bottle of formula + breastmilk in the total of about 6 oz per day, along with breastfeeding every 2-3 hours. I'm hoping to take him in to get him weighed later this week to see if the supplementing is helping with the weight gain.

Finally

Well. I finally found how to type with my mouse so I can update while Beckett is eating.
Beckett is 4 months 1 1/2 week old now. He had lost most of the hair from the sides of his head but it's growing back now.

Beckett is more and more fun every day now. He smiles everytime he looks at me now. And he is sooooo happy in the mornings. He's actually getting to be a lot happier all day now. He's really growing out of his crying phase I think, which makes life a little easier. He's able to play independently for short periods now, either in his excersaucer or on the floor on his play mat.

Starting last week I put his feet up to his face while he was on his change table, and now he's trying to grab them ALL the time!!!

Last Monday or Tuesday I was playing peek-a-boo with him and he let out his first laugh. He had little half laughs before this, but this one was almost a giggle!

He's rolling over like crazy now. I often find him in his crib on his tummy, usually screaming because he's up against the bars and can't get back to his back. He's really good at tummy time, too, pulling his front half up really far now. Yesterday he was scrunching his legs in some, too. I wonder how long it will be before he starts to crawl??

We had him baptized on the 22nd of November in Pictou. I'll add pictures of that soon. He was in very good cheer when we first got to the church, but after 5 minutes or so he started screaming, and pretty much kept it up for the rest of the service.

We keep telling Beckett that Santa is coming soon, but I don't think he quite understands yet (he he!!)

Overdue Update

Just a quick update...

Beckett got his 4 month needles on Monday, the 16th of November. He had his 4 month check up yesterday and only weighed 11 lb 4 oz, not much gain and he has dropped of the bottom of the percentile chart, so we went to see the pediatrician today. He's now 60.5 cm long and his head is 40 cm around. We're going to start domperidone to make sure I'm not having a supply issue and we may have to start supplementing if that doesn't make him gain weight. If so, the doctor recommended a soy free and dairy free formula as she thinks Beckett may have a allergy to cows milk protein.

He's also rolled over!! And I had my camera so I actually got pictures! He's sooo alert now, looking around at everything but also getting very distracted while eating!! He's starting to love bright colourful toys that make noise (rattles, music, etc...) I've got so many pictures to add, I promise to update soon, but this little guy keeps me soooo busy!!

New Weight

Can only post for a minute now, someone just woke up!!! We were at the doctor today and Beckett now weighs 11 lb 2.4 oz.

Growth Spurting Again...

Well, I think we may have entered the 3 month growth spurt. I'm trying to remember what his last growth spurt was like, and I'm thinking that I've blocked it out of my memory because it's all a blur!!! This time he's eating ALOT - we basically laid on the couch today and he ate ALL day. And he's been extra cranky, and in the evenings when he cries it sounds like he's just too exhausted to cry anymore, his voice sounds kind of hoarse from crying. He's also still fighting his sleep, so I'm sure that's not helping the situations.

In terms of milestones, he pushed himself up on his arms yesterday during tummy time!!! All the way up almost!! And, of course, we were in the basement, and the camera was in our bedroom so I missed getting a picture of it. I'm starting to think I need to have a camera in every room of the house to catch all of these things!!

Beckett's First Thanksgiving

Well, at only 12 weeks old, Thanksgiving weekend was pretty uneventful for Beckett. No turkey dinner for him this year. We did go apple picking again, this time, much more prepared to get some cute pictures. We pulled him around the orchard in his car seat in a wagon, but when we tried to take him out for pictures he just cried, so once again, no good apple picking photos!!

Since Thursday or Friday he's REALLY been reaching for things, and sometimes even hitting them or grabbing them for a moment. He loves the toys hanging from his bouncy chair, and anything you hold over him if he's laying on the floor.

He's also been trying sooo hard to suck his thumb. He's gotten much better at getting it in his mouth, but mostly starts chewing on it once it's in there, which hurts him, so he gets kind of cranky!!

He's getting really close to laughing, he smiles at us all the time now, and he's starting to try to roll over some. He's also doing a great job with his neck control. He's almost totally holding his head up on his own now.

Napping has been going better, and along with that has come an improvement in overnight sleeping. Last night he slept from 9 until 2:45!!! He goes to bed much easier if he's not overtired. I'm bracing myself for a growth spurt any day now, though. I remember how tough the 3 and 6 weeks ones were, so hopefully this one will pass quickly!!

Napping Strike Continues

Well, I'm hoping it is coming to an end, but who knows. Yesterday even a walk didn't make him fall asleep. He did have a short nap in his swing yesterday afternoon, but obviously didn't get enough day time sleep as he was up at 11:30, 2:30, 4:00, and 7:30!!! The day before (Saturday) he had 2 decent naps and slept from 7:30-11:30, then till 5:30(!!!), and then until 8:30.

We've been trying to implement a bedtime routine and so far it is going pretty well. We try to be ready for bed by 7, following a bath, feeding and story. For 2 nights in a row now he has put himself to sleep with minimal fussing.

We got some good video of him on Saturday too. He's making sooooo many noises now. He's getting cuter and cuter by the day, I swear!! He's really starting to try to reach for things, too. He doesn't quite have the coordination down yet, but he's soooo close. He especially likes the toys that hang down from his bouncy chair.

Daddy is already trying to influence his choice of hockey teams:

Well, he just woke from an hour long nap(!!), so I think I'll go feed him. Pictures and video to follow soon

Much Needed Update

Well, 2 months has come and gone. We took some 2 month photos:
We went for Beckett's 2 month needles on Sept 17th. At this appointment he weighed 10lb 7oz!! and was 22" long. He was crying before the nurse gave him the needles (2 in his left leg, 1 in his right) and continued to cry for a minute or so afterwards. Then he just got sleepy. We came home and he had a nap in his crib. Unfortuneatly we also had his 2 month check up with the doctor that afternoon, so I had to wake him from his nap, which led to a VERY cranky baby. He cried the whole time the doctor was in the room again. The doctor said everything looked great, and we were on our way. No more needles or doctors visits until 4 months!!

Beckett has been smiling like crazy, and likes to be talked to. He's been trying very hard to talk back, and is doing lots of cooing. This has been going on for a couple of weeks now.

He had his first trip to Mommy and Daddy's home town a couple of weekends ago on Sept 18th. He slept for the entire drive home, except for a quick wake for some food!!

He also had his first trip to Cape Breton to meet 2 of his great-grandmothers. Once again, he was a great boy for the driving. We did get stopped at construction a couple of times and he woke up when the car stopped moving.

On the way home we stopped in at St. F.X. and got our picture taken by the "Smile You're At X" sign.
I've been avoiding dairy because I'm thinking Beckett may have a dairy sensitivity. He seems to be having some belly pains lately and I tried giving up dairy, which seemed to help, but have since started eating it again, and his crankiness/pains came back, so we shall try the no dairy thing again.

I took out Beckett's play mat in the last couple of days and he seems to be getting some enjoyment out of laying there and looking at the toys that hang over his head. He particularly likes the mirror/rattle. He's following things with his eyes sooooo much lately, especially Milo!!

The last 2 days have brought about a napping strike, along with which came an increase in night wakings. Even the car hasn't been putting this little guy to sleep lately. He is napping right now, for the first time since Sunday, we'll see how long it lasts. And he's been fighting sleep worse than ever!! Everytime you think he's asleep and put him down in his crib he's awake again within minutes!!

We had our first trip to the apple orchard on Sunday, Sept 30th for their annual Scarecrow festival. Beckett slept through the entire thing in his wrap!! Not many great opportunities for photos, but we have another trip planned on Thanksgiving weekend so we're hoping to get some better ones then.

Anyways, that's all I can think of that needs updating for now. Sorry for the jumpy post, but I had so much to catch up on and didn't want to leave anything out!!

Our Interactive Boy

Well, I don't have any video yet, because it seems that we can have the happiest little boy in the world, and the second you turn on the video camera, he starts to scream!!!

Over the past couple of days I can't believe how much more Beckett is interacting with us. He smiles almost everytime you smile at him or talk to him now. And yesterday Bevan had Beckett lying on the floor and Milo was right next to him walking around and Beckett eyes followed Milo everywhere he was walking.

And he seems to love being on his change table, he is almost always happy when he's getting his diaper changed!!

8 weeks and counting...

Well, as of last Friday Beckett is 8 weeks old. He's growing waaaaaay too fast. At 8 weeks he's just over 10lbs. He's smiling back at us now lots more!! Over the last few days he seems to be sleeping well. He's been up at 1 and 4 through the night. Then gets up at 7ish and goes back to sleep until 10 or so. Then he has a nap around lunch time and another in the afternoon. Last night we fell asleep for the night at around 8 and slept until 1!!! I think much of his crankiness last week may have been because he was tired. I don't think I realized just how much sleep that little guy needs!!! He really fights sleep and that makes him crankier. You can see that he is tired because his little eyes are closing, but then they pop right back open!! We got a video camera the other day, so hopefully we'll get something good on video so I can add it to the blog soon!! The bowel movements haven't been as green, more browny yellow now. Mommy's been not eating dairy for almost 2 weeks now, I wonder if that is what it could have been. The public health nurse couldn't see any reason for it. We'll mention it to the doctor at Beckett's 2 month visit on Thursday. He get's his 2 month needles Thursday, too. I'm a little nervous for that!! Friday will be his first road trip to Nova Scotia!!

Public Health visit

We visited the public health office today to talk about what may be causing the green poops and have Beckett weighed to make sure he is gaining weight. He weighs 10lb 1.5oz!!!!!!! I can't believe he is over 10lbs now. He's not so little anymore. He's in the 30th percentile for weight now.

I think he grew..

Yesterday I looked at Beckett and I'm sure he is bigger than he was the day before!!! It seems like he just grows overnight. He's almost too big for his playdome and his co-sleeper. We've only used the co-sleeper a couple of times, but there have just been nights he doesn't want to be away from us and it's at least gotten us some sleep!! He's lying in it right beside me as I type. He was up last night from 2 until 4, then up again at 5, so he's fighting sleep now!! He seems to do that alot...you can tell he's tired, his eyes keep wanting to close, but it's like he's afraid if he goes to sleep he's going to miss something!! Then he gets cranky because he's soooo tired. He napped in his crib for a couple of hours around lunch time yesterday. The day before yesterday he didn't have any significant naps all day, then yesterday afternoon he was cranky, so we put swaddled him and put him in the playpen at around 6, and then moved him up to his crib just before 10, and he slept until 11!!! 5 hours!! That is his longest stretch of sleep yet. Until last night the nights have continued to be good.

We have an appointment with the public health nurse later today to get him weighed and see if we can figure out why we are still seeing these green bowel movements, although this mornings was more back to normal colour. We've been trying some more sitting up positions when he's eating to make sure he's not getting too much milk too fast.

I have to remember to type in the list of all his weights later. I've been keeping track of them in a journal, but I think it would be a good idea to have the list here as well.

Good Night Last Night

I'm hoping not to jinx anything by saying this, but the last three nights have been good ones!! Last night Beckett managed to stretch out his feedings a little more than usual. He went to be at around 10:30, and woke to eat at 1:30 and 4:45. Then I think it was 8 when he got up next time, after which we were up for the morning.

We went for our first walk around the neighborhood alone yesterday, just Beckett, Milo and I, and today Daddy came with us.

We have been having some rather unpleasant green BM's since Thursday. I'm hoping it's aftermath from his growth spurt and will resolve itself, but I think I'll make an appointment to chat with the doctor about it on Tuesday anyways.

Quick One

Just a quick update for today, I'm off to spend some time with my boys and I didn't post yesterday - couldn't miss 2 days in a row!!

Last night was a much better night - back to our 1,4,7 o'clock pattern. The little guy has been pretty cranky this evening though. He napped for a few hours around lunch time and this afternoon in his crib.

It was another warm day today, warm enough for just a onesie in the house. I had pants on Beckett this morning so we could run out to get some milk. When we got back I put him in his playdome and heard him squirming around and the next thing you know, I looked and he had squirmed right out of his pants!!!

A few more spontaneous smiles today, still hard to say if they're in response to our smiles or just due to gas, but they're still super cute!!

7 weeks old today....I can't believe how fast the time is passing.

Day 3

Well, we had a less cranky boy today (so far anyways, the day is not over yet!!) If I had to guess what was/is going on, I'd have to say growth spurt. He's been eating more often, he ate every 2 hours overnight last night, which makes for a tired mommy today. Then this morning he seems wide awake at 8AM, but I put him in his crib so I could get up and do a couple of things, then when I went back to get him, he was sound asleep again and slept until about 10:30!!! Needless to say, I was awake by this time but I did have a couple hours of me-time to get some stuff done, have some coffee and breakfast, etc...

Today he's wearing a cute little Joe Fresh dinosaur outfit that Daddy bought him while he was still in the hospital. We're kind of in between clothes sizes right now. He's outgrown any newborn clothes as of the last couple of weeks, but many 0-3 month clothes are still a bit to big - the arms and legs have to be rolled up a bit. The weather has also been a bit confusing when it comes to dressing him. It's cooled off significantly in the last week or so, so I've been making sure he's wearing long pants and socks when we go outside.

Beckett still seems to be sleeping quite well in his crib, too. I liked having him close by in our room, but he makes a lot of little sounds when we put him back down after a feeding, and with him in our room that was keeping us awake longer than necessary. I also think he wasn't sleeping as well in his bassinet in our room, so hopefully the crib sleeping will continue to be a positive thing for all of us!!

One Cranky Baby

Well, we've had one cranky baby on our hands these last couple of days. I'm guessing he may be going through a growth spurt. He's been eating as often as every hour, although last night he slept from 10:30 until 2:30, then until 5:30. He drank 5 oz. in his bottle last night. And basically anytime he's not eating or sleeping he's screaming, even when you're holding him, which usually calms him down.

Our First Post

I really wish I would have started this 6 weeks ago when Beckett was first born, but as a new mother I was just trying to stay alive and awake, so record keeping wasn't top on my list of priorities unfortunately. So I'm saying I'm going to start now, hopefully updated daily or so. We'll see how it goes!!

So, what's going on at 6 weeks at 3 days old??
  • Well, in the last week or so Beckett has started making soooo many more sounds. Lots of cooing and noise on top of the crying sounds he knew how to make in the weeks prior!!
  • We've seen a few more spontaneous smiles in this last week too, although they don't seem to be in response to anything yet.
  • I'm sure he knows his name now, as when I say it he seems like he looks right at me.
  • Still getting up 2-3 times through the night, never sleeping longer than 4 hours at night.
  • He's still eating every 2 hours or so during the day.
  • He seems to be napping a little bit each day around lunch time or so, but I still wouldn't say this is a regular thing as I just let him sleep when he wants to sleep and don't try to force it if he doesn't want to.
  • He's working really hard on holding his head up on his own, but it's still a wee bit floppy.
  • He slept in his crib for the first time 3 nights ago, on Friday, August 28th when he was exactly 6 weeks old.
  • When we give him a bottle it's hard to say how much milk he will drink. On Saturday night we gave him 3 oz. and that wasn't quite enough.
We're still taking tons of pictures but I wish I could say I was staying on top of the photo editing and organization!!!

Beckett wore his first "grown-up" outfit the other night. He wore a little pair of jeans and a white polo onesie and a cute little pair of white sneakers.

I'm finally getting used to being home with him everyday. I wish I could sleep when he sleeps, but I always find so many other things to do.

Beckett's Birth

Well, Beckett has arrived. He's already proving to be impatient like his mother...he was born at 36 weeks and 6 days. Mommy was supposed to work. It was the morning of July 16th, a Thursday. She didn't feel great and was having some stomach pains so Daddy took her to the hospital. She thought she might have a kidney stone or something. They went to the maternity ward and Mommy got hooked up to a monitor even though she didn't really think she was in labour. I think the monitor showed a couple of small contractions, but most importantly it showed that the baby was okay. The nurses got the obstetrician to come in to see us, and he checked us out, only to find that we were already dialated to 4 cm!!! Everyone was very surprised!! They asked us how far away we lived from the hospital and since we live so close they told us we could go home and wait if we wanted, or we could stay at the hospital. They said it could be anywhere from a few hours to a few days or weeks until the baby arrived. We went home and Mommy got a few loads of laundry done. Mommy could feel some funny sensations throughout the day, kind of like the baby was stretching in her belly, not really any pain though. By the time Daddy got home from work at 4 the tightening was happening about every 4 minutes or so. We went back to the hospital and they called the doctor again. He said he would be back in a couple of hours to check Mommy again. By the time he check again, it was 7 or 7:30pm. Mommy was 6 cm!! There was no turning back now, this baby was going to be born soon! Mommy still wasn't feeling much pain. They moved her to a birthing room (room 213) and got everything set up. Over the next few hours the contractions got more intense and closer together. At 9:30 or 10pm, the nurse checked me and I was 8 cm dialated. That's when we started using the nitrous gas for the pain. Mommy was also squeezing Daddy's hand everytime she had a contraction. He was being a great support!! Things went pretty quickly after that. She checked Mommy again at 11ish and she was 9cm, so the nurse called the doctor to come back. He came back and broke my water at around 11:30. There was a resident with him who tried to break my water first, unsuccessfully. I felt a warm gush, but no pain. Things got pretty intense pretty quickly after that. The contractions were one right after the other and I was using lots of gas to cope!! I think Daddy though I was using too much, but I couldn't tell when one contraction ended and the next began. At about midnight the doctor checked again and I was finally 10 cm - it was time to start pushing!! Pushing was not much fun. It all started really fast and it's difficult to learn how to do something so quickly!! At one point I asked the doctor how much longer and he said hopefully 10 minutes or so. I got really determined then and I think the baby was out 7 minutes later!! Altogether I pushed for about 30 minutes. Beckett was born at 12:32am on Friday, July 17th. The doctor and nurse were great!! They put the baby on my chest and the doctor said "here is your son". I was so happy we had kept the baby's sex a surprise. It was an unbelievable feeling to finally have him lying there. They took the baby over next to weigh him and check him over. He weighed 6lb 7oz and was absoluetly perfect!! I remember the doctor saying part way through the delivery that he could see lots of dark hair, and there was lots!! but it was hard to see right away what colour it would be. The docors took care of me and Daddy went over and took lots of pictures.

Our families had been at our house waiting and as soon as the baby was born Daddy called them to come over. They came in after the doctors were finished and we told them it was a boy!!

We didn't have any definite names picked out, because we though we still had 3 weeks to find one!! We narowed it town and finally the next day we named him Beckett. He still didn't have a middle name until Saturday afternoon.

We're sooo happy to have you here Beckett
